DC Native Katie Ledecky Sets Huge World Record, US Record At Swimming World Cup

U.S. Olympian swimmer and Washington D.C. native Katie Ledecky has broken yet another world record, this time, by nearly 10 seconds at the Swimming World Cup in Toronto over the weekend, according to multiple reports.

Ledecky, 25, broke the world record for the 1,500 short course freestyle, clocking in at 15 minutes and 8 seconds, breaking the previous record of 15 minutes and 18 seconds set by Germany's Sarah Wellbrock in 2019. Ledecky finished her race 40 seconds faster than the second place finisher.

The short course race is held in a 25 meter length pool while long course is held in a 50 meter pool. Ledecky broke a U.S. record that same meet, nearly beating the world record for the 800 short course freestyle with a time of 8 minutes, one second off of the record time of 7 minutes and 59 seconds.

Ledecky also holds the record for the most Olympic gold medals of any female swimmer. Ledecky's next stop will be at the last leg of the 2022 FINA Swimming World Cup in Indianapolis November 3-5.
